Flooded basement clean up procedure.
What to do after your basement has been flooded? In order to do it yourself,
you have to think SAFETY FIRST! If there is a water present in your basement
floor, DO NOT step in to the water before you get your electricity and
gas shut off! Getting electrified is not a funny thing. In case that you
cant reach to your circuit breakers box safely, call CGC Enterprises or
a certified electrician to help you out.
After your electricity and gas are shut off, start working on getting the existing water out of your basement. It is crucial to remove the water as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the infrastructure. Once when all the water has been removed, take the existing flooring (carpet, hardwood floor, laminate) a part and remove it to a dumpster or somewhere else for that matter.
Next step is to remove damaged drywall from all areas of the basement. Take a look around and find where was the top water mark on the walls. For instance, if you had 6" of water on the basement floor, top water mark will be approximately 10"-16" from the floor up (depending on how long water was sitting on the floor, because drywall will suck in all the moisture available.) Using the utility knife, make a horizontal cut along the walls several inches from the top water mark (6" preferably) to prevent mold growth on the undamaged drywall areas, and remove the rotten drywall out of basement. If you have wet insulation behind the drywall, remove it all as well.
Okay, the hard part is done. Water has been removed, and all wet pieces of drywall and insulation are gone. Next thing on "to-do" list is to open your windows (if any) and bring as many fans as you can, along with a couple of dehumidifiers. Set them all up and let them run for several days.
Meanwhile, try to determine what has caused your basement flooding. These
examples are typical for Naperville, Chicago, Wheaton, Glenn Ellyn and
surrounding Chicago land areas.
* Malfunction of the sump pumps
* Sewage water back up
* Injector pit pump malfunction
* Poor exterior drainage system
Once when you have determined the cause of the basement flooding, get
it fixed ASAP. Keep in mind to treat all the areas with adequate solution
against mildew, mold, and bacteria growth.
