Basement finishing
Adding a resale value to your home, or simply creating additional space for your children to play, or a "man cave" area with a wet bar and big screen TV for your hubby, basement finishing is always a great investment. Having those in mind, lets start thinking about your basement, what to do with it, and how to create that space you have always wanted. Unfinished basement typically has only one large area room, with several components like: furnace area, sump-pump area, storage area, and perhaps a walk out area .
First thing that is coming into our mind now, is to enclose that loud furnace into nice and quiet utility room, with insulated walls to prevent that noise coming out of that room to the rest of the basement.
Next thing we should be considering is the basement bathroom, or even a sauna perhaps. Adding one to our finished basement will definitely make our friends go "WOW!" and our late night's relaxation even more pleasant. Wet bar for the parties, or just when we had a nice chit-chat with our friends always comes very handy. It really does bring along all those little perks which we all like. Have you thought of a basement theatre? These days projectors are so sophisticated, that many real TV's can simply hide when it comes to the video quality. If we have some more space left, maybe we should think of adding an additional guest bedroom, or an office. Now, lets make this happen.
If you decide to hire CGC Enterprises as your basement finishing contractor, your basement finishing will start with pulling all the permits from the city, village or the county. After those are all set, we are going to put all the scratches, notes and drawings into a nice blueprint, and then we start to build things up. Ceiling could be closed in with drywall or with 2x2' ceiling tiles creating a "dropped" effect. Can lights are common way to go when it comes to illumination, but alternatively you can go with track lights, chandeliers or pretty much anything else you can find in your local retail store. Lines snapping for the base and top plates will help us create a framing layout which will be a bare bone for the entire basement finishing project. Framing out the walls, door frames, headers and the ceiling takes place at this time. After all the rough in framing is finished, electricians and plumbers are kicking in to accommodate the new framing with electrical and plumbing installations. Now, here comes a tricky part. Before we install the insulation, we have to call in a Building's Dept. inspector to come out and pass our framing, electrical and plumbing. Depending on your local area, this could take a several days, and if everything goes well, you should get a framing, electrical and plumbing "pass" sticker (In the city of Naperville, ILL. usually they come out 2-4 days after you give them a call). After we have passed that inspection, we can continue with insulating our exterior walls, and our new bathroom walls as well. As soon as we are done, we have to call the city again to inspect the insulation installation, so we can proceed with the drywall installation.
Drywall hanging, taping, sending, priming and painting is a process which can consume up to couple of weeks, depending on the basement size, weather conditions etc. But, when we are finished with painting, for the first time, we can see how our basement finishing project is slowly coming to an end. Finish carpentry is the next thing to go with. We have to install all the baseboards, door trim, window trim, crown moldings and such. To stain it or paint it, it is up to you, but we always suggest to our customers to keep the existing flow already in the house. If your trim is painted throughout the rest of the house, then we would suggest you doing the same in the finished basement as well. Now, depending on your personal preference, either a carpet, laminate, tiles, hardwood floor or an engineered flooring installation takes place, and in a day or two, you brand new flooring will get installed. Now, lets bring all the furniture down here and lets give a call to the inspector to come out one more time and passes us on our final inspection so we can get our "Certificate of occupancy". Finally, we have gotten our basement finished, and we can finally have that so much needed additional space in our home to enjoy in. If you are located in western suburban area of Chicago, IL. CGC Enterprises can make this basement finishing project....yours.
